This project for my Concept and Storyboarding class was based on creating a surreal commercial. My idea is based around Publix brand Limited Edition Ice Cream, which is usually one of my favorite things to buy when I go out grocery shopping. It is exciting to see what the new flavors will be after a period of time and wanting to try them before they are removed from the shelves. For this concept, the goal is to share those same feelings of curiosity and urgency to get to the next new flavor of ice cream before they’re gone. It will also spotlight the most recent editions to show the variety that Publix has to offer. The overall feel is meant to be fun and invigorating when wanting to indulge in a tasty treat that you might not be able to try again, but the first time is always worth it.

This piece aims to represent the limited-edition flavors of Publix brand ice cream through
the visuals of weather. A storm would appear over a landscape as onlookers approach the
downpour coming toward them. The clouds would be made up of different foods, as well as different patterns and shapes, to abstractly represent the various flavors. As the storm rolls in, rain would pour down in the form of ice cream with spectators taking out their cones to catch a sample. However, the weather clears up and there’s no more ice cream left for the people to try, going back to it being limited edition. All hope is not lost when they hear that another storm is happening elsewhere so they travel to another location where another flavor is available.

In doing research for surrealist artists, the artist who was most inspiring was Maria Medem. Her unique approach to visual storytelling through illustration inspired me to take a similar approach to the design and concept. The piece, just like Medem, features smaller panels showing different moments in time that come together to fit an overarching narrative, in this case, showing different locations where other flavors of ice cream are raining down upon.
